Moments after 2012, Mahmoud Anas Aaraf Al-Shamy joined the thousands of martyrs fallen before him on the road to freedom. He was the first martyr of the New Year while he didn’t exceed the age of nineteen.
Mahmoud Al-Shammy, the son of Hama, is survived by three brothers. He joined the Revolution from the very beginning, protesting against injustice and oppression. In April, he marched in the frontlines at a demonstration on a Friday designated as the “Free Revolution”. That day he escaped the brutal grip of the Shabiha when they tried to capture him. In addition, he captured images of the first protest in Hama and they were used by Al-Jazeera network. Mr. Shamy, the hero, never hesitated to aid his friends regardless of the situation. On June 3rd, the Friday designated for the “Free Children”, security forces used teargas to disperse a protest, suffocating one of his friends. Mr. Shamy rushed to his friends’ rescue and made sure he was in a stable condition.
In order to achieve freedom, Mr. Shamy practiced non-violence. He stood at the civilian checkpoints erected by the people of Hama to protect them from the Army and Shabiha. He politely checked the ID’s of the passersby and was known to say “We accept a prayer for the prophet’s soul” while asking for identification. During demonstrations, he was always careful not to stand under any slogan that might offend anyone.
As Mahmoud Al-Shamy lived for the revolution months ago, he also died for it. On December 29th, He was wounded by security forces on March 15th street, in Hama, during a massive demonstration that headed towards Assi Square in the city center. This was noted to be the biggest demonstration in the Syrian revolution, until it was taken over by security forces and the army. The martyr died, in Al-Hekma Hospital, a few minutes after the start of the New Year, due to lack of plasma platelets in the hospital; although it was requested days ago.
The role of Mahmoud Al-Shamy wasn’t simple or unimportant in his family. He worked and studied while his father was traveled out of the country for years. In addition, he was helpful to his mother in matters of life despite his young age. He worked in the fields of medicine, blacksmithing, and glass but his most important job was the industry of freedom, he did it well and left a great pride for his family.
